Troop 1701 is involved with The High Ground Veteran Memorial in Neillsville, Wisconsin. Service to others is important to us. We set up benches and repair trail signs. We help with spring clean-up by grooming 4 miles of hiking trails. We are honored to welcome Veterans and hold the the Tribal flags during the "Ride to Remember" motorcycle rally and various stone placement dedications. We camped and hand made our own atlatls & spears from area woodland. On Sunday morning our Troop Chaplains Aide held a service in the Meditation Garden.
We enjoy visiting historical places such as Galena, Illinios. While camping we worked on our cooking skills and invited another troop to join us for dessert. We participated in General Grants Pilgrimage parade and festivities along with 4,000 scouts.
We took a Troop Family trip to the National Eagle Center and celebrated the 5th year of the eagle of the endangered species list. Exhibitions included were Birds of Prey, The Bell of Honor, chainsaw carving and Native American Folk Lore, Singers & Hoop Dancers. We attended a special presentation at the museum learning more and earning our Indian Lore merit badge.
We planned the appropriate equipment and clothing to use, planned our meals and shopped for our 20 mile hike. After hiking our older scouts taught younger scouts fire building, cooking and how to set up camp and make a duty roster.
Troop 1701 Life Scouts led 4 Eagle Projects and assisted 4 fellow scouts with their Eagle projects as well. We assisted a scout with his project, set up camp that evening and the next morning the entire troop bicycled the 50 miler in 6 hours! We camped that weekend learning dutch oven, open fire cooking, and leadership skills.
We enjoyed the use of the U.W. Stout Climbing wall and the Stout Ropes Course while learning about our capabilities, strengths, and the benefits of teamwork.
In the fall Troop 1701 took a canoe/kayak trip. While camping we learned about wilderness survival, how to build a hand made bow/arrow, dutch oven and open fire cooking.
We took a trip to the lake and learned how to swamp, pump water out and regain control of our canoe. Being prepared for a canoe trip is vital to our safety.
Troop 1701 enjoys various Council & District camporees and activities.
Each year we enjoy our troop family sledding party in the Knapp Hills. We also enjoy a family ski trip to Trollhaugen ski resort.
